Het Parool: dogs go everywhere now, also in carriers and backpacks
On 10 January 2025 Amsterdam newspaper Het Parool published a feature by Esther Muller on a trend anyone in the city recognises: the dog comes along everywhere. From the coffee bar to the office to the plane. Where the bike used to have a crate or basket on the handlebars, there are now travel bags and backpacks, and Homies was one of the brands in the piece.
The vet's view
Amsterdam vet Joyce Hofman told the paper she sees owners taking dogs and even cats along more and more, including on flights, and that people often worry too much about cycling with a dog: in fifteen years of practice she rarely saw a dog hurt while cycling. Her tips: start training early, keep the dog on your right, never wrap the leash around your wrist, and for longer distances use a backpack or basket.
The owners
The article follows Amsterdam dog owners who solved the distances of a big city with a carrier on the bike, including a whippet puppy learning to ride along from day one. One quote stuck: "I would recommend a backpack like this to anyone who is single and has a dog."
