To be sure the Homies dog carrier fits, measuring is essential. Breed alone is not enough: dogs of the same breed vary a lot in size.

How to measure your dog (30 seconds)

Measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail (back length).

The tail does not count.

Is your dog between two sizes? Take the larger one for comfort.

Size XS - 30 to 36 cm

For dogs with a back length of 30 to 36 cm

Fits: toy poodles, chihuahuas, very small dogs

Size S - 36 to 43 cm

For dogs with a back length of 36 to 43 cm

Fits: dachshunds (standard, not oversized), maltipoos, similar small dogs

Size M - 44 to 53 cm

For dogs with a back length of 44 to 53 cm

Fits: small to medium labradoodles and similar dogs

Meet the Homies Dog Carrier, also known as the Doggybag: a carrier made for real life together, not the trail. Designed in Amsterdam and developed with veterinary professionals, it gives your dog a safe, ergonomic ride on the bike, the train, to the cafe or the vet, hands free for you and calm and close for them.

Every Doggybag has padded straps for comfortable everyday carrying, breathable panels so your dog stays settled, and an internal safety clip to keep them secure. The lining is 50% recycled nylon, and the whole bag is Fairtrade produced by a female-owned factory. Every bag sold donates one meal to a dog shelter.

How do I know which size to choose?

Measure your dog from the base of the neck to the base of the tail (back length, tail not included).

The full size chart is under Sizes and info above, and the size calculator on this page works it out for you. Stick to those: that is the only place we keep the sizes.

How do I get my dog into the backpack?

The main thing is: practice, practice, practice. The first few times your dog has to get used to it, but it really gets easier fast.

Step by step:

  1. Let your dog sniff the backpack, so it gets familiar
  2. Start small, a few seconds inside and reward with a treat straight away
  3. Build up calmly to 2 minutes, then 5 minutes, and reward every time
  4. Make it fun, so the backpack means you two are heading out together

Will my dog sit comfortably in this?

Yes. The backpack was designed with input from vets and tested for ergonomics. It has padded support, breathable mesh windows and good weight distribution. Your dog has to be able to sit naturally with its paws down. Always clip the safety leash to a harness, not a collar.

Is this safe for a dachshund?

Yes. Our backpacks have been extensively tested and approved by certified vets, also for long-backed breeds like the dachshund. The design supports the natural sitting position with good weight distribution.

It comes down to the right size and the right use:

  • Measure your dachshund's back length carefully (most standard dachshunds fit size S)
  • Always use the internal safety leash on a harness, never a collar
  • Support your dog when lifting it in and out
How long can my dog stay in the backpack?

Your dog can stay in the backpack as long as it is comfortable and relaxed. On longer trips, take a break every 1.5 hours to pee and stretch. You want to get out every 1.5 hours too, right? So does your dog.
