The backpack was developed together with vets, also for long-backed breeds like the dachshund, where a wrong posture shows first. An internal safety clip stops your dog climbing up while you walk or cycle.
Which size fits your dog
The dog carrier comes in XS, S and M, up to 20 kg. Choose by back length, not weight alone: measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, without the tail. XS fits a back length of 30 to 35 cm, S 41 to 43 cm and M 51 to 53 cm. Between two sizes? Take the larger one and add the 5 cm cushion.
Looking for a dog backpack up to 10 kg? XS or S is usually right. For a dog around 15 kg, S or M; up to 20 kg, M is the upper limit. Above 20 kg we advise against the carrier, however much you would like to bring your dog.
What you use it for
On the bike, where your dog otherwise cannot come along. On a walk that runs longer than your pup can manage. In the city, on public transport, or the moment four paws have had enough and you still have half an hour to go. For a small dog a backpack is often the difference between staying home and coming along.
Getting your dog used to it
Force nothing. Put the bag open on the floor and let your dog step in by itself, with a treat. Then fasten the clip without lifting the bag. Lift it briefly, set it down, and build up to a few minutes around the house before you leave. Dogs that spend an hour on the bike the very first time mostly remember that.
What to look for in a dog backpack
Four things. Breathable material, because a dog cools down by panting and through its paws. Adjustable straps, so the weight lands on your hips and not your neck. A closed base with enough support, so your dog's back stays straight. And a safety clip, so it cannot climb out when something walks past.
