Dog Carrier Backpack for a 15 kg Dog: Which Size Fits?

A dog carrier backpack for a 15 kg dog works, and the size comes from your dog's back, not the scale. Every Homies bag is tested up to 20 kg, so 15 kg sits inside the rating. A back length of 36 to 43 cm is size S. A back length of 44 to 53 cm is size M.

Check both on the Homies Dog Carrier Backpack page and use the size guide for the full chart. A 15 kg dog can land in either size, so the tape decides. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Dog backpack 15 kg: S or M?

Two 15 kg dogs can stand side by side and need different bags. One is long through the back, the other is short and deep through the chest. The scale shows the same number for both. The tape shows two.

Size Back length Tested up to
S 36 to 43 cm 20 kg
M 44 to 53 cm 20 kg

XS covers 30 to 36 cm. All three sizes sit in the dog carrier backpack collection.

We don't call any breed at 15 kg an S or an M. Our size guide places small to medium labradoodles in M. Moos, The Netherlands, writes: “My little labradoodle fits perfectly and looks so adorable peeking out of the bag.” That is one dog's report, so measure yours.

Want sourced breed figures? Our small dog breeds guide has them. A dog nearer 10 kg has its own guide to a dog carrier backpack up to 10 kg, and a dog close to the ceiling has the dog carrier backpack up to 20 kg guide.

How to measure your dog's back

  1. Let your dog stand on a flat floor, relaxed.
  2. Find the base of the neck, where it meets the back.
  3. Run a soft tape along the spine to the base of the tail. Leave the tail out.
  4. Write the number down, then read the chart. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Keep a treat in your other hand. A fluffy coat hides the neck, so press it flat before you start.

What 15 kg on your back means for you

This is where the scale matters. You carry your dog plus the bag, on your back, for as long as the ride lasts.

Test it before you order. Fill a rucksack with 15 kg of something heavy, put it on and walk around the block. If that already feels like too much, plan the bag for short rides only.

Then fit the padded straps snug, so the bag sits close to your back. A loose bag swings with a dog in it. If anything pinches or aches, set the bag down. That is your answer for the day.

When to ride and when to walk

A healthy, fit dog who loves walking should walk. The bag is no replacement for the walk.

It earns its place on the last stretch. Marieke de Jong writes: “My mix breed doggie is super active but has joint issues, so when he gets tired, I pop him in the bag and we’re good to go.” Josje Hermans writes: “sometimes it's too far and then the bag is really ideal (he's still young).” Both describe the same pattern: the dog comes along, and the bag takes over when the walk gets too much.

Three checks before every ride

  • Use the internal safety clip every time, even for the short hop to the corner.
  • Put the bag on and adjust the straps at the door, before you are halfway down the street.
  • Set the bag on the ground or a bench and let your dog out calmly. No jumping off your back.

Mistakes that cost you a return

  • Picking by weight and skipping the tape. A 15 kg dog can need S or M.
  • Buying the smaller size to save space. Between two sizes, the larger one is the rule.
  • Handing the bag to a dog who has never seen it. Let your dog sniff it at home first, with a treat nearby.

Above 20 kg, this is not the bag

Every size is tested up to 20 kg, and that is where the rating stops. A 25 kg dog is outside it, and we won't stretch the number to make a sale. Let a dog that size walk. For longer distances, a dog stroller or trolley is the better choice.

Questions about a 15 kg dog in a backpack

Is a 15 kg dog too heavy for a dog backpack?

Not for the bag: every Homies backpack is tested up to 20 kg. The other half is you. Load a rucksack with 15 kg and walk around the block first. If that feels fine, short rides are realistic.

Can a 15 kg dog sit in the bag?

Yes, when the size matches the back length. Measure, take the larger size between two, and let your dog try the bag at home for a few minutes before the first outing.

Which size does a 15 kg dog need?

S or M, and the back length picks. S is 36 to 43 cm, M is 44 to 53 cm. For a much smaller dog, see our guide to a dog carrier for a dog up to 5 kg.

Can I carry a 15 kg dog for a whole day?

The bag is for rides: the last stretch home, a crowded platform, a tired dog. For a full day, let your dog walk and ride when needed. Your own back sets the limit, so build in breaks.

Measure, then pick your size

Take the tape, find the number and choose S or M. See the Homies Dog Carrier Backpack in size S and M, or browse all the dog carrier backpacks.
