Puppy carrier: show your puppy the world before it can walk it

Can you carry a puppy around before its vaccinations are finished? Yes. A puppy carrier is one of the options named in a veterinary guide from Ohio State University for moving a puppy around when ground contact is a worry, next to strollers and slings.

The timing is the catch. In that guide the socialisation period "begins at age 3 weeks and continues to age 12, possibly 14, weeks of age". Improve International adds that some puppies may not be fully immunised until after the socialisation period has ended.

In a carrier, your puppy can see, hear and smell the city while its paws stay off the pavement. Ask your vet which places are fine for your puppy, and keep the vaccinations on schedule. A carrier doesn't replace them.

For a small-breed puppy, the fit is the Homies dog carrier in size XS, once its back is 30 to 36 cm long. Measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, tail excluded, and check the numbers on our sizing page.

Why the first weeks matter so much

The Ohio State guide calls the first 12 weeks "prime time for socialization". A puppy's brain is "learning who and what can be trusted as safe", and dogs show concern, fear and potentially panic about things they didn't learn to trust early on.

The same guide says anything a puppy will meet later in life should be introduced before 12 weeks when possible, without causing fear. For a city puppy, that list looks like this:

  • people on bikes and skateboards (both named in the guide)
  • people in uniforms, hats or glasses (also named)
  • a café terrace with chairs scraping
  • the tram bell on a corner at 17:30, when the whole street is heading home

Go slowly. The guide's advice for new things is to start at a distance, let the puppy approach on its own and pair it with treats. A carrier makes that easy: your puppy watches from your back and you decide how close to go.

What vets say about going out before vaccinations

The Ohio State authors argue for balance. Weigh the risk of infectious disease against the cost of missing the socialisation window, and build "an individualized plan for each puppy". Their baseline is at least 3 doses of the combination vaccine between 6 and 16 weeks, 2 to 4 weeks apart.

On places, the guide says spots where dog traffic is high or unknown "should be treated with caution, but not necessarily avoided". A puppy "can be carried or strollered" between places when the paths are busy with dogs, and "Strollers or slings are also an option if contact with the ground is deemed too risky". Sticking to the pavement and keeping off grass where dog traffic is unknown reduces the risk.

The Improve International article, written for vet teams by Nicole Harris, is blunter: "Pre-vaccinations, puppies may be at risk if placed on the floor." It suggests owners may consider a carry bag instead, and calls the vet team "perfectly placed to advise" new puppy owners.

So the "ask your vet" line isn't filler. Your vet knows your puppy's vaccine dates and can run the risk assessment the guide describes.

Which puppy carrier size fits a puppy?

Size is the first limit, and it comes from back length. Measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, tail excluded. Our ranges:

Size Back length
XS 30 to 36 cm
S 36 to 43 cm
M 44 to 53 cm

Between two sizes, take the larger. A small-breed puppy fits the XS once its back reaches 30 cm. A larger-breed puppy goes into S or M only once its back length is inside that size's range, and until it does, it isn't ready for that size.

If your puppy sits low in the bag, a folded towel underneath lifts it so it can look out. Fold it flat and check it sits comfortably.

Not sure which size? Measure your puppy on the sizing page. For a very small dog, our guide to a carrier for a dog up to 5 kg goes deeper, and the whole range sits in our dog carrier backpacks.

Puppy sling or backpack?

Both can work: the Ohio State guide lists slings next to strollers as an option. A backpack sits on your back and leaves your hands free for your keys, your coffee and the front door. We compare the formats in dog backpack or sling.

Your first five trips, step by step

Go in order, and move on only when your puppy is relaxed. Royal Canin's puppy guide says to take a puppy into the bustle only when it is relaxed ("alleen ... als hij ontspannen is").

  1. Introduce the carrier indoors. Leave it open on the floor with a treat inside and let the puppy climb in by itself. Our step by step guide to getting a dog into the backpack covers those first sessions.
  2. Stand on the doorstep. Carry the puppy a few steps outside, then back in.
  3. Walk a quiet street. Let your puppy watch a parked bike go by.
  4. Sit at a café terrace. Strangers will want to say hello. The Ohio State guide advises asking people about recent contact with dogs of unknown health status, and having them clean their hands before and after meeting a puppy.
  5. Stop at a tram stop and let the puppy take in the bell, the doors and the crowd from your back.

Signs your puppy has had enough

A puppy can't tell you it's done, so watch for it. Dogs Trust lists these as subtle signs of stress:

Inside of the olive green Homies carrier backpack, opened flat

  • lip licking when there's no food
  • yawning when it isn't tired
  • moving away or hiding from what worries it
  • barking, whining or growling

A puppy that scrambles to get out is saying it plainly. Dogs Trust advice is to stop, identify the cause, calmly create distance and ask others not to approach. Then head home or find somewhere quiet. Worried about the bag itself? Read is a dog backpack dangerous.

Puppy carrier questions

From what age can a puppy go in a carrier?

None of our sources sets a minimum age for a carrier, so size and your vet decide. Royal Canin's puppy guide says a puppy may leave the litter at 8 weeks. Your puppy's back needs to reach 30 cm for the XS. Ask your vet before the first trip.

Can my puppy touch other dogs before its vaccinations?

Ask your vet first. Improve International advises meeting only fully vaccinated dogs in a private garden, and warns that a bad experience with another dog at this age can be worse than a lack of exposure. The Ohio State guide adds that any dog meeting a new puppy should be healthy and current on vaccines and parasite prevention.

What if my puppy is too small for the XS?

Check the back length first: the XS range starts at 30 cm. If your puppy is longer than that but sits low, put a folded towel underneath so it can see out, and keep trips short. If its back is shorter than 30 cm, it's below the range we sized for, so wait until it grows into it.

How long can a puppy stay in the carrier?

We can't give a number, and none of our sources does. Keep the first trips short and let your puppy set the end: lip licking without food, yawning when it isn't tired, moving away or whining all mean stop, per Dogs Trust.

Start the first walk without walking

A puppy carrier gives you back the weeks you'd otherwise lose: the city gets to meet your puppy before the ground does. Check with your vet, measure the back and start on the doorstep. When you're ready, the Homies carrier in XS is waiting, and you can browse all our dog carrier backpacks.
